My husband and I had come to Lonavala for a weekend away from the never-stopping Mumbai. It was my husband’s 40th birthday and I wanted to do something special, so I had planned hot air balloon Lonavala for a long time. I had to save up in secret for it, but it was really a unique experience. An operator picked us up from our Lonavala hotel early in the morning, and took us to the departure point in Talegaon, where we were joined by another couple and our pilot.
The gentle giant
The pilot briefed us carefully and lightened our mood after cracking bad jokes. My husband got to help with inflating the balloon, and he was laughing like a kid with excitement. Once it was ready, we clambered into the basket. They took off the weights and we started rising immediately. The basket gently dangled when a tour operator took the second weight out. I looked up to watch the flame shoot up to our balloon’s red centre. When I looked down again, we were quite high.
Lighter than air
We drifted over the misty mountains and fields till I could only see blobs of brown and green below. For a just a moment, the wind stopped and we floated in place. I felt a surge of excitement when the cold air touched my face again. I saw the birds fly past us. It was so surreal. When we were high up, the pilot took out a cake too, just like I had requested. We cut the cake in the air, and my husband was just thrilled.
Like a breeze
I didn’t realize when time went by, but then it was time to descend. The landing was gentle, and the basket bumped on the ground. We tumbled out of the basket, and felt our legs shake a bit to be back on solid ground. But I wanted to go back in the sky instantly. I wish I could buy my own balloon and just commute everywhere with that.
Ballooning in Chandor, Goa
My husband and I couldn’t stop talking about ballooning. A few months later, we were going to Goa for a weekend. On the spur of the moment, we decided to book tickets for the hot air balloon in Goa. It was just incredible! We floated alongside the Kushawati river, waved to locals go about their daily life, and we saw the sun rise in between the palm trees. We got pictures taken from afar as the pilot on the second balloon was a clever man.
Next stop: Ballooning in Jaipur, Rajasthan
After our second balloon ride, I was looking for the next place to try it. I read some blogs and articles about hot air ballooning in Jaipur, and I would love to go. Can you imagine floating over the heritage forts and palaces of this colourful city? Sigh. Time to start saving up again.
Why it’s so fascinating
I learned a lot in our hot air balloon Lonavala. It’s not like an aircraft: there’s no engine, we aren’t propelled into the sky. There’s no sure-fire way of steering. It’s like sailing the winds. We’re at the mercy of the currents, a thin cloth, wicker basket and a tank of explosive gas. In many ways, a hot air balloon is more bad-ass than paragliding! But it feels so lucid and calming that one truly feel like I have conquered the skies.
